THE SUNDAY SHIFT: The 6% Club

Hello and good day Reader,☀️

Welcome to The Sunday Shift!

I was deep in research for my book last week, coffee getting cold, papers scattered everywhere, when I stumbled across a stat that made me stop scrolling: Only 6% of people actually achieve the goals they set.

Here's the breakdown: about 20% of people even bother setting goals, and only 30% of those actually follow through. So we're talking about 94% of people who either never commit to something meaningful or give up somewhere along the way.

I stared at that number for a long time. No wonder so many of us feel stuck or restless.

It's not that we lack dreams. God knows we all have those late-night "what if" moments. The real enemy? All the other stuff: the doubt, the fear, those voices that tell us to stay put. Be realistic. Don't rock the boat. Who do you think you are?

I lived with those voices for years.

Fifteen years ago, I was deep in corporate marketing, climbing that ladder, when this idea hit me out of nowhere. What if I just... left? What if I built something that was actually mine?

The thought wouldn't leave me alone. I was so fired up about it, I even brought it to my boss. Maybe she'd get it, you know? Maybe she'd see the vision.

Her response, she didn't want me to leave.

And just like that, the voices got louder. What if you fail? What will everyone think? This isn't what people like you do. It's too risky.

So I stayed. Kept working. Kept climbing. Don't get me wrong, there were genuinely good days. I loved parts of what I was doing. Until COVID hit and suddenly... I didn't.

That's when I finally said enough. I set a goal that wasn't up for negotiation: leave corporate, get my coaching certification, and build my own thing. No more "someday." No more waiting for permission.

It was messy as hell. Scary. (More than) half the time I had no idea what I was doing. There are days I still don’t!

But here's what I learned, for certain: self-leadership changes everything. It's not about having it all figured out, but trusting yourself enough to figure it out as you go. You’ll be amazed at how resilient we are as humans.

You learn to sit with the uncomfortable feelings instead of running from them. You start questioning all those "shoulds" you've been carrying around. You fall down, get back up, and keep going anyway.

I wouldn't trade that journey for anything. There's something powerful about proving to yourself that you can do hard things.

Ideas to Ponder

  • What dream have you put on the shelf because it felt too big or too "out there"?
  • Where are you calling something "practical" when it's really just fear talking?
  • What would it look like to actually be part of that 6% not perfectly, but all in?

🎯 1 Focus This Week

Pick one small goal that connects to something bigger that you want. Write it down somewhere you'll see it. Tell someone about it. Then do one tiny thing to move it forward.

Most people never even take that first step.

What if you did?

I believe you are the most powerful leader you’ll ever know. One small shift, Reader, will help you believe it, too.

To bold moves ahead,

Jenn

P.S. If someone you care about is hovering at the edge of their own dream, forward this to them. Sometimes the right nudge makes all the difference.

THE SUNDAY SHIFT: #030 - Why do we focus on what's wrong?

Hi Reader, Welcome to The Sunday Shift! You are not your shortcomings. So why do we spend so much energy focusing on them? I sent a beta version of my new 12 Principles of Self-Leadership Assessment to about 30 people—friends, former colleagues, and new connections in my entrepreneurial world. All high-achieving, successful professionals. And then my phone starts lighting up: “This question hit me hard.” “The report looks as polished as the big names.” “Holy sh*t… I feel like a failure.” “I...

THE SUNDAY SHIFT: #029 - What does bold feel like to you?

Hi Reader, Welcome to The Sunday Shift! I’m writing this from a small, bustling café in Watch Hill, glass of chilled white wine in hand, my husband across from me, and the (adult) kids wandering the shops. We’re on vacation, and yet my mind can’t help but come back to something I’ve been building. “I’m building The Bold Revolution,” I say out loud. He listens, then gently reminds me how hard building a business is. He doesn’t say this in a discouraging way; it’s in a way that says I see the...

THE SUNDAY SHIFT: #028 - Are you holding someone back?

Hi Reader, Welcome to The Sunday Shift! It’s Monday evening and I’m reading an article on breakthroughs. One woman shared a story about her judgment toward her friend group. An elite, extreme group of runners who train and compete at levels she couldn’t imagine. Her thought? “Why spend so much time pushing yourself that far? Take a break. Have fun. Add some joy.” Then she had a breakthrough. She realized her judgment wasn’t about them at all. It wasn’t because they didn’t hang out with her or...
