THE SUNDAY SHIFT: When connection sparks community

Hi Reader,

Welcome to The Sunday Shift! And happy Father's Day to all the magnificent Dads🩵

This week, I want to share how five words from a stranger changed the trajectory of my business by reigniting my vision, “You must write a book.”

In early January, after launching my business, I received a message from someone in a like-minded entrepreneurial community. We lived in the same city, but had never connected. I pushed myself to say yes to the opportunity. He was wintering in a warmer state, so we jumped on a Zoom. As a long-standing introvert, I was elated thinking, “oh, thank goodness!"

That someone was Luis A. Marrero, author, seasoned entrepreneur, and deeply thoughtful human.

He generously offered his wisdom, insight, and encouragement. And as we wrapped up our call, he left me with a simple and powerful statement:

"You must write a book."

At the time, I was already sketching ideas, but his words added fuel to a quiet fire.

We agreed to meet in person once he returned in the spring. That time came this past week, and we met up at a local coffee shop. He showed up with a copy of his book, Meaningful Purpose: A Primer in Logoteleology, and more than an hour of his time.

When he asked how things were going, I answered with three truths:

  1. I launched my business to prove I could.
  2. I quickly realized I wasn’t fully aligned with the version of me I was putting out there.
  3. I’m having a blast now—coaching amazing clients, rebuilding clarity, and showing up more authentically every day.

Then I shared one more thing: I'd pulled my book manuscript out from the digital dust pile of buried drafts. The one I'd set aside in November 2023.

I thanked him for his nudge.

Because when I reread those early chapters, something lit back up and my breath slowed, my shoulders softened, and that deep inner knowing, the one that reminds you who you are and who you’re becoming, returned.

That’s what a single, genuine connection can do. Luis's nudge didn't just help me find my manuscript again. It reminded me how powerful genuine connection can be. Which brings me to some questions worth sitting with.

Ideas to Ponder

  • Who’s nudged you toward your next chapter (and have you thanked them)?
  • What conversation or community connection brought you back to yourself?
  • Where could you be more open to receiving wisdom, encouragement, or even a push?
  • And this one, from Luis—share it with someone close to you: “How can I show up for you so you can be the best version of yourself (and vice versa)?”

🎯 1 Focus This Week

Say yes to one meaningful connection. Your new supportive community will follow.

This week, reach out to someone whose work inspires you. Send that reply you've been drafting. Accept the coffee invitation. Ask a thoughtful question in a community you're part of. Your supportive community often starts with a single genuine conversation.

Sometimes, the moment you speak your truth or receive a thoughtful prompt is the moment you shift. And that shift might just bring you back to yourself.

I believe you are the most powerful leader you’ll ever know. One small shift, Reader, will help you believe it, too.

See you next Sunday,

Jenn

THE SUNDAY SHIFT: #030 - Why do we focus on what's wrong?

Hi Reader, Welcome to The Sunday Shift! You are not your shortcomings. So why do we spend so much energy focusing on them? I sent a beta version of my new 12 Principles of Self-Leadership Assessment to about 30 people—friends, former colleagues, and new connections in my entrepreneurial world. All high-achieving, successful professionals. And then my phone starts lighting up: “This question hit me hard.” “The report looks as polished as the big names.” “Holy sh*t… I feel like a failure.” “I...

THE SUNDAY SHIFT: #029 - What does bold feel like to you?

Hi Reader, Welcome to The Sunday Shift! I’m writing this from a small, bustling café in Watch Hill, glass of chilled white wine in hand, my husband across from me, and the (adult) kids wandering the shops. We’re on vacation, and yet my mind can’t help but come back to something I’ve been building. “I’m building The Bold Revolution,” I say out loud. He listens, then gently reminds me how hard building a business is. He doesn’t say this in a discouraging way; it’s in a way that says I see the...

THE SUNDAY SHIFT: #028 - Are you holding someone back?

Hi Reader, Welcome to The Sunday Shift! It’s Monday evening and I’m reading an article on breakthroughs. One woman shared a story about her judgment toward her friend group. An elite, extreme group of runners who train and compete at levels she couldn’t imagine. Her thought? “Why spend so much time pushing yourself that far? Take a break. Have fun. Add some joy.” Then she had a breakthrough. She realized her judgment wasn’t about them at all. It wasn’t because they didn’t hang out with her or...
