THE SUNDAY SHIFT: When curiosity cracks the door open

Hi Reader,

Welcome to The Sunday Shift!

This week started rough. And it's showing up in the time of day you're getting this. Normally I send The Shift on Sunday mornings at 8:05. When I set things up for this week, I accidentally selected PM. It's okay, things happen for a reason. I got to make an adjustment before sending. Now let me tell you about the past rough week...

You know that feeling when you're running on fumes, operating on pure autopilot? That was me. Compassion drained, energy scattered everywhere, stuck in that familiar groove of just trying to get through each day.

Einstein had this thing about energy attracting like energy, and man, could I feel it. The more I slumped into frustration, the more life seemed to pile on reasons to stay there. It was like the universe was saying, "Oh, you want to feel stuck? Here, let me help with that."

Somewhere in the middle of all this, I found myself reaching for an old playlist from 30+ years ago. You know how you do that when things get rough? There's something about music from our past that feels like it might hold answers.

I landed on two songs that couldn't have been more different. Sweet Jane by The Velvet Underground—steady, grounded, finding beauty in the ordinary even when life feels heavy. And Ocean Size by Jane's Addiction—this raw yearning to be vast and untouchable, beyond the reach of everyday mess.

Was I looking for that dichotomy? Maybe. Because there I was, caught between both feelings. Part of me wanting to just accept the ordinary and the other part of me desperate to transcend it all.

That's when it hit me. I'd been trying to escape my own mess instead of leaning in with curiosity.

Curiosity is what finally pulled me out.

It's one of my core self-leadership principles for a reason. When everything else feels closed off, curiosity cracks the door open just enough to let some light in.

Instead of spiraling down that familiar rabbit hole of "What's wrong with me?" I started asking different questions. Simple ones. What's actually going on here? Why does this feel so heavy? What would make me feel even 1% better right now?

Tiny questions, but they rerouted me. From judgment to exploration. From default to discovery.

This week looks better already!

Ideas to Ponder

  • Where are you stuck on autopilot, just going through the motions?
  • How might a little curiosity shift how you see it—or even shift how you feel inside it
  • What simple question could you ask that might crack the door open?

🎯 1 Focus This Week

When you catch yourself in default mode, take a pause. Ask one curious question instead of making a judgment.

Your curiosity doesn't need to demand answers. It just invites you to explore. And sometimes, that's all it takes to start moving again.

I believe you are the most powerful leader you’ll ever know. One small shift, Reader, will help you believe it, too.

To bold moves ahead,

Jenn

P.S. If someone you love is stuck in their own loop, forward this to them. Sometimes all it takes is the right question to start a new story.

THE SUNDAY SHIFT: #030 - Why do we focus on what's wrong?

Hi Reader, Welcome to The Sunday Shift! You are not your shortcomings. So why do we spend so much energy focusing on them? I sent a beta version of my new 12 Principles of Self-Leadership Assessment to about 30 people—friends, former colleagues, and new connections in my entrepreneurial world. All high-achieving, successful professionals. And then my phone starts lighting up: “This question hit me hard.” “The report looks as polished as the big names.” “Holy sh*t… I feel like a failure.” “I...

THE SUNDAY SHIFT: #029 - What does bold feel like to you?

Hi Reader, Welcome to The Sunday Shift! I’m writing this from a small, bustling café in Watch Hill, glass of chilled white wine in hand, my husband across from me, and the (adult) kids wandering the shops. We’re on vacation, and yet my mind can’t help but come back to something I’ve been building. “I’m building The Bold Revolution,” I say out loud. He listens, then gently reminds me how hard building a business is. He doesn’t say this in a discouraging way; it’s in a way that says I see the...

THE SUNDAY SHIFT: #028 - Are you holding someone back?

Hi Reader, Welcome to The Sunday Shift! It’s Monday evening and I’m reading an article on breakthroughs. One woman shared a story about her judgment toward her friend group. An elite, extreme group of runners who train and compete at levels she couldn’t imagine. Her thought? “Why spend so much time pushing yourself that far? Take a break. Have fun. Add some joy.” Then she had a breakthrough. She realized her judgment wasn’t about them at all. It wasn’t because they didn’t hang out with her or...
